Hi, I'm Jake

My Teaching Philosophy

About me

My deepest beliefs

One of my inmost ideas referring to tutor is actually that everyone is able to learn: specific capacity, impairments, and previous education and learning change the trouble degree, but every person is essentially able to find out if they apply themselves. This particular feeling expands out of my individual years of experience as a mentor in Spence.

Breaking the stereotypes

At mentor topics having considerable quantitative information, I have actually often noticed students come to be quickly scared when mathematics goes into the picture, hence my goals for children include not only instructing them the topic but additionally building their self-esteem in it. I regularly point myself as an example: when the students have actually had time to gain assurance in my education of the course material, I tell to the trainees that are having problem with it that despite the fact that I have degrees in natural science and seismology, I have actually constantly been slow at mathematics. I tell them that I have actually learnt that in case I simply have the persistence with myself to take my time, I will certainly obtain to reach the right response - even if it takes me longer than my schoolmates. My expectation is that this ruins their habits of stereotypes and enables them not only to believe in themselves however also to become aware that not everybody who does scientific research or mathematics is a genius. I additionally do my best to bear in mind what it was like to gain an ability such as development and to proceed from that viewpoint when teaching those abilities. Rather than make students seem evaluated for a noted shortage of ability, I want them to get to know that in the real world speed and aptitude are not as essential as cautious reasoning and tough work.

How I make students understand everything

From my background that discovering can be much easier for some students and tougher for others, specifically due to differences in the method we perceive and comprehend the environment, I frequently discuss points in several different ways (usually with visuals and/or body language) and employ parallels and allegories along with definite situations.

This viewpoint that students are all different however inevitably skilled also indicates that I seek out hands-on, customised teaching situations as much as possible, specifically while analysing student learning. Within any kind of course I would educate, I would certainly produce as many opportunities for this type of training as would be possible for the layout of the course.

Most essentially, I try to create an informal, welcoming ambience. I believe that this sort of environment is much more motivating for students of all degrees to really feel more free in talking with me or with their classmates. Interactions with students are crucial to exactly what inspires me to tutor: my best reward as an educator is an excited student who understands the theme and shares their excitement with me.

My hobbies

My hobbies

Running is my perfect "alone time" interest. I like to run with headphones and listen to my preferred guilty joy music. I have time to think. I forget about work. When I'm done I feel renewed. I love all of these things. It's also a good hobby for my personality type, because I can make and achieve small goals, which is a huge source of incentive for me. Now I'm working my way up to a 10 km run and it feels amazing to get closer and closer to my goal. In the end the goals are supporting, though. What I get out of my hobby is that it sets aside time just for me. Some folks may feel exactly the contrary, needing a social hobby instead.

A Little About Myself

I have constantly been the student that asks a lot of! I could remember this being something that for a long time made me really feel rather self-conscious in classes, however now after going through a number of rounds of examination seasons I have actually seen numerous advantages of asking all those inquiries! I feel that due to it I will have a great empathy with my tutees, and also hope that I could supply a comfortable area where they really feel able to ask me anything. Furthermore, as a result of this I am now a lot more knowledgeable about how to provide great answers!
